Kato Union Pacific Smooth Side Passenger 6 Car Set 106-014. This is Kato model 106-014. The outer cardboard box shows a lot of wear with sticker residue and staples. This does not affect the inner case which just shows minimal wear. The passenger cars look brand new. NOTE: The coaches do not come with coupler pins. I assume they were once included, but they were not with the set when I bought it from my local hobby shop. Prototype Information: The Superliner I fleet was built in 1979 by Pullman Standard. Amtraks Superliners were based on the famous Budd built Hi-Levels operated by the Santa Fe railroad, for their El Capitan all-coach train. 102 Superliner I coaches were built, and 48 Superliner I coach-baggage combination cars with a secure baggage hold instead of lower-level seating. The Kato EMD F7 comes in both A and B (cabless) variations, and is retooled from earlier variations of the F-unit locomotive chassis to make it DCC friendly. Passenger units can be identified by their Steam Generators vs. Fully detailed interiors can be lit with optional Interior lighting kit with LED (NOT INCLUDED). Finely detailed with prototype accurate painting and lettering. Free and smooth rolling trucks for maximum performance. All cars are equipped with Kato semi-automatic knuckle couplers. Kato 106-084 AT&SF Santa Fe El Capitan 10 Car Passenger Set – New! The Santa Fe El Capitan offered coach travel between Chicago and Los Angeles using hi-level coaches along with a diner and lounge, its double decker hi-level cars providing a greater passenger capacity than traditional single-level trains. The El Capitan was revolutionary in that it offered excellent service and a train schedule that matched the speed of first class sleeper trains such as the “Super Chief” while remaining affordable to the every-day passenger. In fact, in January 1958 the “El Capitan” and “Super Chief” trains were consolidated to run together, though in peak traffic times such as Christmas or the summer months the two would still keep separate train schedules to accomodate the increased ridership.
